Discuss EICR on large hotel in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

When we have recently undertaken a EICR on a large hotel,we have found that the 13amp sockets within the bedrooms are not protected by an rcd,and obviously can be used for any use by ordinary persons.Should we advise to protect them by rcd's to comply with current regs, although the rest of the building could considered to be managed, the bedrooms are not.Just fitting labels to them stating for hotel equipment only seems implausible, any thoughts.

It's a grey area, if cables are installed where RCD protection is not required, then you have to assess risk to public. Especially on upper ground floors where current using equipment will not be used outdoors. We usually recommend it for additional protection.

Well said that man perfect answer to the question,

What edition of the regs was the installation installed to. If it complies to the edition to which it was installed then you can only give it a code 3.

Do you think that a guest in a ground floor hotel room will be using an electric lawnmower or hedge trimmer then?

Ha ha yes very good point maybe it's a working holiday

So are sockets only allowed to be used by guests? The hotels we inspect have patio doors on all ground floor rooms where I have witnessed maintenance staff plugging extension leads into to room sockets when required.
No need to be sarcastic.

What does the version of the regs to which they were installed say about ground floor sockets that can be used for portable equipment outdoors.

So if a car was built before airbags were introduced then the MOT station can fail it yes ?

Surely it would be good advice to advise the customer of how much safer their car would be with the new added safety features.
If they where conscientious they may deem it worthwhile investing

Not doesn't have to be done but what harm can it be to advise clients an upgrade is well worth considering

Correct that's why you C3 it but you cannot force them to do it ie C1 or C2 it so why am I reading posts like this where people are doing this

On a personal note I have been advised by some clients they will only ever consider remedial work on Cat 1 and 2 and leave all Cat 3 altogether.

If this was the case here then RCD to sockets will never get upgraded.
I'm just saying better be safe than sorry

Not overly relevant, they can only compare to standards it was built to. We have to consider current regs as well as those it was installed to.
Dave sorry to say it is relevent because you can have an installation with a 3036 CU that was installed to the regs at that time and if it tests out ok then it passes . i have said this before here when doing an EICR you can advise via C3 to get RCD protection but you should not C1 or C2 because if you do it can come back to bite you like the landlord who was told he had to have RCD protection for a rental property and got a full refund from the company who put this in writing to him after he paid them to change the CU

Only a bit of amusement mate, no offence intended. (Hence the smiley.)
