Hi,
went to fit 3 downlights today customer purchased them. And they had no earth. i am correct in thinking that downlights metal surely should be earthed? They had the gu10 lampholder then plastic junction box attached. No earth. I drilled the corner and put and attached a cpc, just found it unusual.

Plenty of Class 2 metal downlighters out there. Loads have earth terminal with no direct earth connection to the fitting too. JCC for one.

As WPD said they will either be re-inforced insulation or double insulated and thus dont require earthing this should be in the instructions and you may also find a box within a box symbol in the instructions and/or on the fitting.
