My own problem is that when the grill is on, sometimes the mains trips which takes out all of the other units like boiler freezer etc. The individual trip for the cooker does not drop out! Does that mean there is a short somewhere?
I suspect the switch for the grill as yesterday I turned it a bit when it was on and then the mains did drop out. It doesn't always do that so it seems that there is something wrong with the switch...maybe. I checked one element and the wires to it are fine and it all heats up fine too.
I checked the mains switch on the wall and tightened all the connections, nothing loose or blackened there. I've not checked the back of the cooker yet.
Getting to this switch is going to take a strip down I think so I'd really like to know if that may be the problem.
Many thanks

Most likely the grill element shorting to earth I have had them where they work for a bit but as they heat up the short gets bigger and also had one that used to trip as you turned it off, need to get someone with a insulation tester to check it out for you

I'm guessing what is tripping is an RCD - either for the whole house supply, or for some circuits. Perhaps post a photo of the consumer unit / fuse box if you can.

If this is the case, then often this is due to earth leakage, e.g. a faulty element or other component. Switches themselves can also be faulty. Ideally get the appliance tested first before changing any random components in the hope that might fix the issue.

Thanks Ian... That sounds very similar. I'll get someone in.

Thanks SJD .

attached is a pic of my consumer unit. The centre switch drops out but not the one on the cooker. I lose all power to the right of that switch of course.

if you mean the 2 module device with the RCD sticker under, that covers all circuits to it's right. it means that you have an earth leakage >30mA , presumably on the cooker, but not guaranteed).

Thanks telectrix.... I have a multimeter and will test each element in the grill as a starter.

Typically you'd test for earth leakage with a meter that generates 250V DC. Your multi-meter is only going to test at low voltage, though it may well show up the problem.

Thanks. Looks like I need to get an elec man in. But I am much closer to understanding things now. may thanks all.
