Discuss How would you run this cable up past coving? in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

Long story short, I'm reusing a cable for an old motion detector which I no longer have. I've stepped it down to 12v, and I will step it down again to 5v for a ceiling mounted echo dot.

I've always been stuck on how electricians decide to run cable to where they need it. You can see from the first picture it probably isn't long enough to push up into the ceiling void to terminate it onto a longer run of cable (yellow on second pic) to put it where I want it (the red square on the second pic). Any ideas? Would you take the coving off and join it 'inside' the coving (putting the coving back on)?

I think I've touched lucky with the joists, (I think) this run will be parralel with a joist so shouldn't need to do anything there.

Really appreciate any opinions on this

Usually if you're careful it's possible to cut out a small piece of the coving with two vertical cuts maybe 20-50mm wide, with a stanley knife or maybe a multitool, With luck, the coving remains in one piece, so can be put back in afterwards and the cuts filled, or if the slice is narrow enough, filler added to remake the shape.

If the coving is old original plaster or stuck on very well it doesn't usually work, but that looks fairly recent.

If you can do that, then you can join the cable behind the coving and go up into the ceiling there. Then if you're lucky you can rod across to the relevant point.

Took your advice, spot on - job done. Thank you.
