hello sparks i have a number of sodium (SON) low bay light fittings and was wondering was it possible to use metal hailide lamps with them so they give of a white light instead of the orange that SON lamps produce! is it as simple as just changing the bulb! thanks in advance

Pop to your wholesalers and explain although you cant interchange metal halide and son their is a lamp that fits standard son control gear but gives white light but its name eludes me ive had these from Senate and CEF

Venture is the lamp name just make sure you get the right kind as in internal or external igniter.

Depends upon the make, Crompton made a floodlight (Darksky) which was capable of using both types of lamps and I know Tridonic mak control gear which does both.
I stand corrected on the metal halide/son interchangable:eek: but the venture lamps about £20-£25 (for a 400w) are a good way to go with standard son ballasts.
Thx for the correction ian:) but ive a feeling he aint got the suggested crompton or tridonic control gear.

If you are looking for a straight lamp swap you could use the Venture White Lux range for SON control gear or Venture Euro for Mercury Gear

There is a metal halide lamp made to opperate in son fittings, I know this to my cost after buying 2 metal halide fittings from CEF they gave me metal halide lamps made for son-t fittings.

Needless to say they would not work correctly, swapped said lamps with 2 new ones same result. Swapped new fittings for 2 new ones same result.

Only after talking to light manufacturer tech dept did I discover the reason. By then I was a few hours and a few quid out of pocket (I had to hire a tower scafold to change one good fitting for another good fitting) And I looked pretty silly to the customer.

i replaced a full warehouse with metal halide lamps, that were son lamps b4 , i got them out of c.e.f they were called dual control lamps

Maybe a bit late but hey

Some different manufacturers lamps cause problems when trying to start, but we have found the Phillips HPI-T PLUS always work and never cause a bit of bother. Only thing is with metal halide you need a glass of polycard cover as lamps can sometimes over heat and blow

Yeah as the men say, if the gear in the fitting is duel (ie allows both son and mbi) you can just put in a normal metal halide lamp. If not then you can get the Venture White Lux range for SON control gear, they are a bit mxpensive but alot cheaper than changing the full fitting.

having the same problem here, got dual plus from cef and installed them into the son fittings they worked first time but when you switch them off they would ignite again.

Welcome to the forum and note the date on the thread as its nearly 3yrs old, your post suggests that when you turn the fitting off the lamps strike again ???? with no power is this how you meant to put it?
