I live in a rural area. I don't get any cell service here and satellite internet is terrible. I have found I get good internet by running my hotspot up this tree. Until now I have been powering it with a usb battery. My plan is to enclose it with a project box and run POE to power it. How would I properly ground this from lightning? Would I even need to ground it? The picture is my idea right now but not sure how the grounding would work. Any help would be much appreciated. Or any other ideas to power it.

I hope it looks better than your drawing ? but at least you having a GFCI receptacle is the right thing to do. If it’s not broken don’t fix it

Is that PoE cable all the way back to the GFI outlet? Somewhere you need to have the PoE injector to convert your supply AC power to the 48V or so DC the network cable carries.

What sort of cable length are you looking at?

Network cables & PoE is quite tolerant of electrical noise and surges, but not a direct lightning hit, obviously! Having a rod and grounding wire is a good idea as it would limit how much gets back to the house.
