I have a 12 year old Neff Oven b1442n0gb who's fan element stopped working.

I bought a generic element from amazon (NEFF Fan Oven COOKER ELEMENT 2400w eq2 499003 spares: Amazon.co.uk: Large Appliances - https://www.amazon.co.uk/COOKER-ELEMENT-2400w-499003-spares/dp/B002ZXUV2C/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=2400w+eq2+499003&qid=1572014944&s=appliances&sr=1-1).
The oven has three spade connectors - two with single wires, one with double wire.
After connecting up the new element, RCD tripped when turning the heat on for the fan element (other parts of oven worked fine without tripping - top element, bottom element and fan).
I wasn't 100% sure if I had connected the wires to the correct terminals in the new element so I changed to the two single spades to one terminal and double to the other.
Now fan element is working, but I can't control the temperature - regardless of what I set it to, it just goes to max temperature and light stays on

I guess I should just get the thermostat replaced?

But I'm wondering is it actually something else.
When the fan element went, the thermostat was still working fine with the other elements.
Could it be caused by having a generic fan element even though it has good reviews on amazon?
I'm also unsure if I wired the spades correctly - could that cause an issue with the thermostat or is the fact that the new element heats up proof that it's wired correctly?

Almost undoubtedly you have got the connections wrong on the element.
Do you have any test gear?

Normally it is the element that goes with ovens, and you can tell if the old one is pitted, bent or otherwise looks “damaged” compared to the new one.

I don’t suppose you took a photograph of the connections before you disconnected anything?

It might help actually if you photograph the wires and post on here. Someone might be able to help if they’ve worked on the same model and knows the colours used.

Thanks all. Image attached.
So there's 4 cables - a single black/white, a single red/white, and joined black/white and red/white. The two singles are in one terminal and the joined ones in another terminal.
Elements are working fine. Thermostat isn't working, elements heat up to max.
