hi, hola, bonjour! This is my 1st post ever on any forum or indeed on the www! I have recently finished a 2 year college course on electrical installation and testing (city & guilds 2330-2331) and am now trying to find my way in the slightly daunting world of domestic installation in the hope of becoming my own boss but more importantly becoming the best damn spark around!! My first job i have completed is the re wire of a bungalow which was great to get my teeth into and not too challenging. My next is an extention to a house with new garage, expansion of kitchen an additioal rooms. My questions will be many but 1st important one is current cu installed is full and seems most practical solution is to add a 4/6 way cu mounted in new garage, is henley block best practice and does it need to be in any type of enclosure. Would appreciate any info/feeback and am more than open to constructive critisisem (not sure thats spelt right!?!)

Many thanks chaps and chapets

As long as there is additional protection by means of an RCD then good. What type of earthing arrangements here? Earthing and bonding upto current regs?

Current cu has rcd protection (is not a split board) additional/new cu will have rcd. Haven't checked current earthing and bonding so will do that before i start (thanks). Additional tails was going to use 25mm with 10mm earth.

Welcome to the Forum.....

Why the need to locate this additional CU in the garage?? Can it not go in the same location as the existing CU??

If the present CU isn't particually up to date, why not replace with a new CU with enough ways to cover the extra circuits of the extension. A far better solution i think!!!

And if you do choose this option dont forget to allow 10% spare ways.......

Current cu is 5 years old so suppose could warrant an update but has been fitted an wired up then client has built a cloak room around it space is very limited, new cu in the garage would be back to back with existing and give me eaiser access to my desired cable run. Do feel like bigger replacement cu would look a neater in the end tho, would be my 1st board swap so not 100% sure how much work is involved.

Well if going for a board change what do you think the work would be....and the paperwork that would accompany it?

well i would say aside from cosmetic work making the space for new board and making good afterwards i would have to have supply isolated by supplier, remove & label existing circuits mount new board re-instate existing circuits have supply re energised. Paper work wise, schedual of test results, schedual of inspections

Hi welcome to the forum (or all forums!) good first post!

You would also need to complete the electrical installation certificate.
Henley blocks (or equivalent) is the easiest way forward, good chance also to install an isolator after the meter to avoid having to get supply disconnected next time a change is due. No particular enclosure is required unless there are external influences to consider.
Depending on your earthing arrangement's you may need to increase to a 16mm2 earthing conductor.
