Instead of using the sy glands I wonder if you could use the external swa glands?

i know you should use the correct part designed for the job but always thought the ring in the external swa gland would tighten up on the taper enough to hold the braiding in the swa cable, therefore the braid would be held on earthed.
I maybe and probably wrong but was always under the impression that the correct sy glands are expensive?
opening my self up for abuse now, I've never had to use sy cable so ill stand corrected

Unlikely, as the braiding is a lot thinner than SWA.
I've used some glands, that will tighten up all the way on SWA, they would stand a chance with SY.

i've never actually seen one of these glands, i use the method where you seperate the strands then twist together, wrap with earth pvc tape and put a lug on it.

The sy glands actually clamp the braid the same as a swa gland. It's just that it uses a rubber grommet to clamp the braid to the steal cone. But there are some that just work like a brass to rubber, in which case you would put a lug on it and earth it. That's probably the best way as unless they clean up the area of paint it might not earth proper anyway.in either case it should be earthed which would eliminate the voltage or show a fault in the cable which you could pick up with a insulation tester between e cores and the earth.

Here is a proper sy gland, it uses two brass washers to earth the braiding.

Secures the cable properly and earths the braid, with a flying lead if need be.

It is possible to use a CW or E1W gland on SY. If you double the braid over at the end where the olive sits, it clamps the braid to the body of the gland. I've used it before and wouldn't hesitate to use it again. A tug test is a good idea, before the back compression seal is tightened.
