I did it in Stirling, but I wasn't impressed with them. If I wasn't working offshore I would've considered doing the night classes at college. Cost was £950 for 5 day combined 2394/5 and the 2 nights for written exam. I enjoyed the courses and am glad I did them, but as I say that mob in Stirling were taking the **** with the facilities and quality of the course overall.

As in they were poor? What were the lecturers like?

I was enrolled at my local college but cancelled last minute because of work!

The lecturer informed us that whilst he was happy with our practical assessment, city and guilds might not be because they aren't happy with the 2 courses being combined into one. If we fail because of their fussy approach, he suggests we ask for feedback as to why. My response to that was WTF, are you seriously saying this while we're doing the course!

When I told him I'd been working offshore for the last 10 years, he said "well, maybe you'll pass this you never know"... And when I scored 97% on the multiple choice, he congratulated himself on being a great lecturer!

It wasn't all bad with him to be fair, but the facilities were poor... Old DB's that were marked RYB, breakers hanging out a board we were to power up... Lunch included in the price, but guess what... They didn't bother giving us any. The test equipment wasn't calibrated and a test repeated straight away gave different results (I better not fail that practical on test result values).

There was a group in doing their 17th when I was in doing my written exam this week, and they were giving the guy hell for the state of the course content.

I've started using icertifi on both iPad and iPhone its really good software very professional when printed or emailed and you have copy with you at all times on the same devise

Yea, business is up and running. I'm not going to be taking on any work until February, although the requirement for SELECT membership for Landlord work is giving me a bit of a chicken and egg situation. I want to trade solely in testing and inspection, but SELECT need 3 projects to assess.

And what requirement is that? I do a fair bit of work for letting agents and I'm not a SELECT member?

I'm going by the advice on the law change that happened this month...

The person who conducts the checks must be employed by a firm that is a member of an accredited registration scheme operated by a body recognised by the Scottish Government

And, what I meant was dealing with testing and inspection initially, I'll need to see how the client take up is and assess whether it's enough to keep me going or if I need to broaden my horizons.

If you're dong inspections for landlords now, are you having to do PAT testing for them or is the requirement generally just EICR? According to that advice, PAT tests must be done at the same time as the EICR.

Thanks for for the info, I knew about the changes just not the scheme part, looks like they've managed to wangle more business surprise surprise, looks like I'll have to join one then, was going to join Stroma, made the enquiries, but was asked for £280 before I had spoken to anyone or even asked what the requirements were so I told them where to go. I will be going with the cheapest though as it's all a bit of a farce!

Yeah I PAT whatever needs doing, generally there isn't much as landlords don't tend to leave many items for use apart from washing machines and sometimes fridge freezers.

I wouldn't try and stick to just T&I mate, advertise for it but I would think you'd need to do a bit of everything to earn a crust, EICR's take up about 10-20% of my work, plus the variety is better, you'll crack up just doing the one thing lol!
