Had to give a broken down mate a tow last night - couldn't find a rope so used a length of 10mm T+E (old colours). Any ideas of what the actual breaking strain might be? (let alone the legality)

I would have used the new colours & kept the old coloured stuff in good nick. It's far too valuable to be using as a tow rope ;)

If you look in the book anything over a tonne then you have to use 16 mm or just towing a shopping trolley with a mate then 1.0 mm will be fine but remember to get the polarity correct otherwise it won't matter a sausage

2.5mm is OK if you make it a ring.

Lucky you never got pulled over and asked if you had the right kind of driving Licence to offer a tow......

What size breaker on the end of it? Was it RCD protected? You can never be too careful with these things......
