Hello everyone. I know just enough electrical knowledge to keep me using my electrician. I am a carpenter and just bought a new planer. 220 volt 5 hp motor with 23 amp draw on the motor plate. The unit was sent with a 10 foot plug with 12 awg wire and an L6-30 plug on the end. The manufacturer requires the matching outlet be installed on a 30 amp breaker. Can someone tell me that I should not be concerned that the plug is fed by 12 gauge wire. My basic knowledge says it should be #10. They stated the machine and its plug meet UL and CSA standards. I had the machine rewired with a new 10 gauge wire with the matching 30 amp L6-30 plug as a precaution but now I’m questioning the rest of the machines wiring as the wire leaving the magnetic switch and between the on off and the motor are all #12 awg.
