He guys

As I'm looking to become a trainee sparky. I need some hole saws to drill holes for some pipes. So thought I'll just buy a set for the future.

What will be a budget friendly options?

Are there a must have sizes for a sparky?

Any brand should avoid or get ?

Would a carbon steel one or bi metal ones do? I seen some carbon steel sets knocking around cheap on amazon or shall stick to well established ones?

thanks for any advice.

common metric sizes 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm..... collect the bigger sizes as you go. Ive got about 5 different ones for different makes of downlights, for example.

yes... standard conduit is 20 and 25mm... the old 3/4 and 1 inch.

plumbers drain pipe starts around 22mm... all inbetween sizes. but some kits might have both. no need to buy them if youre not going to use them.

Electrical wholesalers will do kits with the 2 arbors, and a range of sizes. See if you can get a good price. Even Screwfix...

It is better to buy good quality, and drill at the correct speed, andthrough suitable materials.... You'll soon blunt a good holesaw designed to cut metal by trying to drill wood with it, for example.

I purchased this handy little Starrett kit recently

Looks good. Im trying to find a kit with these standard sizes..20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm

The 40 isn’t as common as the 20 and 25, so that kit could do you well.

Like I say, you can get the other sizes as and when you need them…. Or replace the smaller ones when they go blunt.

Check if you swap manufacturers though.
The thread to screw the holesaw onto the arbor will be the same, but the saws and arbor drills come in different sizes.

The inner drill needs to be longer than the depth of the holesaw

The problem with kits is they are limited to the sizes set by the supplier, you could go for
Over twice the price and unless you know the type of jobs you are going after it is likely many of the sizes will not be used, as an example this kit has a range of sizes covering most electrical sizes but you are getting even more expensive.
I have quite a few different holesaw sets with different size ranges all be it with a few common sizes and most of the contents do get used and additional sizes have been added that are not included in any of the kits. The range of holesaws I have starts at 16mm and goes upto 150mm although not all available sizes are covered some are used often others very rarely but they are what I have built up over the best part of 50 years and some have worn out or have broken and been replaced

The first kit I linked to is IMO a good small "jobber" kit for some one starting out as it has the sizes you will regularly use for glands and / or grommets ok 40mm can be a handy size but it is not one I use very often these days compared to 30 - 35 years ago when I was installing a lot of trunking and industrial distribution equipment, if you are installing downlights then yes you are going to need 57mm+ holesaws if you are trying to run cables through ceilings and you can't lift the carpet or laminate upstairs then a 150mm holesaw can takeout a clean hole in the ceiling and the slug can be used to repair the hole afterwards

My advice would be start small and build up
