I have a customer wanting to install a couple of very nice, rather classy wall lights above basin in refurbished bathroom in 150 year old property. They're clearly not IPx4 but could easily be converted to 12V, with transformers located in loft space above bathroom.

I'm going through BGB (701.512.2 and 701.512.3) to see if there's any wiggle room here. Apparently not: 701.512.2 says anything in zone 2 needs to be IPx4 - with exception of suitably located shaving points complying with BSEN 61558-2,

If the fitting is SELV the purpose of the IPx4 rating would seem to be only to maintain its reliability, rather than enhance safety - or maybe I'm misunderstanding that part.

Does anyone have experience of putting non-IPx4 rated fittings in zone 2 - in a 'heritage' style hotel, for example? I'm wondering is there are other ways of adapting a fitting that is clearly suited to a period property so that it fully complies with the relevant Regs here.

if it's within 0.6m of bath then tell him it's a NO.
