hey, wondering if i could get a bit of advice.a mate of mine works in an office where a mains change was done about 6 months ago, they never received a eic for the job and the sparks is no longer in business. they then had a periodic done but the new sparks wont sign it off without the eic. i dont do periodics myself so i was wondering
1 why does the new sparks need the eic
2 whats the best way to get over the fact there is no eic?

The presence or absence of an EIC has no impact on wether you can sign off a PIR.

cheers widdler, thats what i thought, i was wondering if the new guy was just going to copy out the results from the eic. this is for insurance purposes, does that affect the pir in anyway?

if he carries out the testing for the EIC himself, then puts the results on a Periodic on the same day then ok. If he just copies the EIC readings obtained from another electricians testing, onto his own PIR, then he shouldn't be allowed to use a tester and should go back to plumbing

excuse my ignorance but he should test and record everything himself anyway as part of the pir?

The PIR is a snapshot inspection of an installation, think of it as an MOT, but the difference being it is a report NOT a certificate. Past reports are only an aid to ascertain whether the installation has deteriorated during this intervening time. I too would worry that someone would be trying to copy the previous report to cut corners. There is a box on most PIR forms detailing previous inspections, and if none are available I just tick "Not available"

Exactly. It's called a periodic INSPECTION report. Not a periodic 'sit down and copy someone else's results' report.

cheers graeme, i see what you mean. i was just racking my brains as to why he would demand the eic. i know one should of been issued but i cant see why he is so insistant on it other than being a lazy bark.

I might imagine that if he is demanding the EIC knowing it is not available he might try and sting you for more work, along the lines of "I'm going to have to test the whole installation/ check everything line.

A PIR should be 100% unless otherwise agreed with the client, even with % sampling, if faults are found 100% of the installation may end up being done anyway.
