Hi Guys
I was certified back in Feb with Elecsa but not done much electrical work since due to family comitments and am really new to the industry after redundency so please forgive my need for reassurance as am a little rusty.

Basically, I have a detached garage with 2.5 twin and earth being spurred from a double socket in the house through metal conduit giving one socket in the garage. A spur from this garage socket has then been taken to feed the lights.

Basically I want to change the socket in the garage to a 13 amp FCU so I can add about 8 double sockets in the garage, I then want to add a 5 amp SFCU for the lights, can anyone see any problems with this?

Its pretty basic but as I said, its a learning curve and I prefer to learn slowly on my own house as I dont have the pleasure of working with anyone else,

I dont want to go direct in to the C/U as its full and my proposal seems to be a quick and acceptable way?

Nothing wrong with that!Is the socket circuit supplying the socket in garage rcd protected?

Thought it was 100% - just getting back in to the swing of things and doubting myself when I know the answer. Yeah RCD protection, new consumer unit in Feb, cheers

Was just doubting the lights being on SFCU at the end of the radial spur. but couldnt see anything in the regs to say of the limit of FCU's/SFCU's from a spur

The problem i forsee is 8 x double socket outlets on 1 x 13A fuse.

What will they be supplying???

I thought of that but its only tV stereo etc, no power tools, probably only using 4 sockets maximum but wanted them in for convenience, if it becomes a problem I will have put a second C/U in, its juust a kids play room. There are only 4 lights in total with 6w bulbs each so even at 100w max should be no problem with overloading.

We had a pool heater installed and an outside "Water Feature " !!! Its a 12 way fully loaded at the moment

IMO Thats probably not ideal.

Its true that you can spur off put fcu and run as many sockets as you like but you have to give consideration to what the sockets will be used for.

The best way to do this is to install a garage consumer unit in the garage which will be rcd protected and have two mcbs usually a 16A and a 6A.

The feed to this board would have its own dedicated MCB in the house and Iwould personally use 4mm T/e cable ( appropriatly installed) to allow for future changes in garage. this would be fed from a 32A MCB.

Now as the garage is detatched the question is what earthing system do you have in the house because if its TNCS would this class as exporting PME.

Maybe someone else on the forum will clarify this point.

Surely that should read banks of 3Kw heaters if your misses is anything like mine!

No point wasting time and money.If the fuse blows a couple times then you can think about wiring a separate supply.Its not a garage its a kids playroom!I bet you won't pull 13 amps

I cant see 13 amps being drawn at all so for cost and time wise I think I will stick to it, ideally a second C/U would be the answer

I had considered this and currently looking at exporting PME, will need clarifying on this for when I do get around to "doing it right"

Might have to rethink my options, kids probably wont go in there in the winter so it could be "dads rooms". you're right pool table, jukeboxes, pole dancing....sold

Better go 3 phrase or a generator the size of of an Eddie Stobbard by the time I finish....
