I am volunteering at a disabled riding school charity and have been been donated a hay steamer that we want to get running. However, the quote we have been given to upgrade the wiring to support it exceeds our funds. I'm trying to find a cheaper way to do it by avoiding changing existing wiring where I can. Basically I need to fit a waterproof ip44 socket on one end of the stable block and then run a swa cable 50 metres down the back of the stable building to the consumer unit at the other end. The steamer is 2.9kw. I plan to ask an electrician to do the hook up to the consumer unit when ready. A. Few questions...
1. Can I just clip the swa cable to the wooden building about 150mm from the ground.? (There is no traffic at the back.)
2. Will 2.5mm 3 core swa over 50 metres be OK to support a 2.9kw heater? (I've looked at the tables which seem to say that 50m in normal cable it would need to be 4mm but swa 2.5mm and I don't understand why they are different.)
3. Is an electrician likely to be OK with taking on just the hook up aspect of a job?
