Tried to buy some once but all I get offered is blank stares or the standard 'single insulated and sheathed' tails which according to the NIC are not classed as double insulated!

Next time the NICEIC tell you that, ask them the method of protection for tails in a TT installation.
Inspection of a TT installation, prompted the discussion and my attempt to buy some but NIC couldn't offer satisfactory solution IMO.
Looking online, the 'run of the mill' meter tails (6181Y) are almost entirely advertised as 'double insulated'!!
Shall carry on using them and risk a wrist slapping next time we are inspected
