Help with new regs regarding mini trunking.

As yet i don’t have the new regs book so I thought i would post my question.


I have a client that manages a block of flats. Its a mid 80s block that has one entrance/exit. As you walk in the font door the clients wants the current lights to come on as walk in. which is fine i was just going to put a directional PIR up over the door as the lights need also to come on when the residents open there doors and walk in to the hall way, which is the other end of the hall way to the front door.


Now in order to get the PIR up over the door I will need to run a cable along the ceiling from the first light that has the permanent live. Normally you would could just put the cable inside some mini trunking. But I know that in the new regs there has been some changes to its allowed use, i.e. as the mini turning melts in a fire the cables drop and there have been case when is hindered firemen. Now what is the permitted way to hold a cable to the ceiling so that in a fire it does not dip down. The distance is only about 2m but it would be right over the door.


Can anyone help tell me whats can be use.

You can get some clips that fit inside the trunking to hold the cables in place in the event of the trunking melting. Not had to fit any yet so have no idea about availability, try your wholesaler. Alternatively try steel conduit or plastic with steel saddles. But you need to check if these will meet the regs.

You want your work to comply with the BYB, you need to purchase a copy, there are alot changes than just this you know.

As far as i know its a concrete ceiling/floor with a small plaster board void. The lights are attached to the plaster board.

So I have wasted my money buying and time looking up relevant things in the regs when I can just ask for the info on here?

Get a grip, if you want to know things buy it read it and ask questions then. Is it any wonder the trade is going down the pan with that sort of attitude?

Thank you DillB i agree with your comment. I post questions on this forum room because I believe that the people that reply are people that are in the industry, and not just one of those DIY forums that everyone just likes to comment of why you ask. We all have different levels of knowledge and experiance to share. that hopeful we can all gain form it. As long as people don't try and free load.

I think the OP's question is quite resonable. The BGB is still permitted to be used for design but the OP has heard of requirements in the new BYB which he/she wants to comply with. If this question had been asked in August 2015 then I agree that the OP would have been pushing their luck without owning the new book.

It's not like the OP is asking the forum to size a cable or to solve an RCD fault.

To answer the question, P clips are probably how I would do it.

Of all the forums I use this has got to be the most unfriendly one going. Sorry, but are we trying to scare people off here? I know people should have the new regs, but it was still a reasonable question to see what peoples thoughts were.
