Like i say my friends kitchen downlights will only stay on for a limited time then turn themself off, i havnt come across this before, im guessing if theyre LV the transformer/s may be the main cause but would like to know other possible causes on e.g mains downlights, pendants. Thanks in advance, Lee

All I can think off is ELV transformers with a thermal cut out.

Too high wattage lamps fitted, meaning the transformer is putting out an higher output than it was designed for, so, as said above, they'll cut out with a themral breaker insode the transformer.

If they are on transformers, then it more than likely the lamps have been changed by the home owner, and a greater value lamp is now in place and overloads the transformer. So check how many lights per transfomer now and then find out what the transformer can take.

Your lamp holders have loose connections after the heat has built up it breaks the current flow.... common on 12v diochroic lamps ... when replacing the lamps check for heat damaged pins i.e. not shiny silver looking.
