Hello. I'm looking for some advice for an issue I've been having for several months now. I use to be an avionics technician for helicopters while in the US Navy, but as for houses...I'm at a loss here.

My electric usage has a little more than doubled for the past 6 months now. Nothing has changed though. I have a small 1 bedroom home (1/2 of a duplex) and no additions to appliances. I have a refrigerator, gas range, two small window AC units (don't run all the time), and just the regular things like tv and computer. My electric bill just last month had me using 2,668 khw. My normal for the same month for the past 3 years has been about 1,000 to 1,300. This goes back to about April now. Comparing past bills my usage is at least double that what it use to be.

I've contacted my electric company many times to inquire about it and what can be done and they are suppose to send someone out to check my meter to make sure it isn't malfunctioning but it's been weeks and no test. Not to mention everyone I've spoken to says their meters don't speed up, they slow down when they go bad. It is a bit upsetting to see your meter spinning like a top though. I can turn everything off in the house and the meter cranks along at a slow pace. Turn anything on though and it starts whirling.

My landlord insists he won't hire nor authorize an electrician to investigate the problem until the electric company first verifies their meter is not the problem. Meanwhile I'm dealing with $400 electric bills that I simply cannot afford.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

have you tried plugging one appliance in at a time to see if one particular appliance is causing this? just a thought as i have no experience of this.

i aaume you're USA based

your landlord want's the utility company to check the meter before he does anything -usually the other way round ime

was it especially hot the last while -regarding air-con,refrigeration usage etc.

90 units or so a day is a lot (if that's the actual usage)for a small property

I think your neighbour is tapping into your supply, or maybe a line of street lamps!
Use a clamp meter on the supply, turn everything off in the house...take a reading it should be zero, then power up each appliance one at a time, take a reading each time. You will need to find power usage for each appliance, its usually labled...add it all up, the current will show on the clamp meter, it should balance with appliances 2/5% plus/minus. (may show in Kw, or appliance may show Kw...if so google "convert Kw to amps"

do you have an electric cooker, mine once developed a fault when timer function was on but not set it would turn itself on.thru the night on half power
