Hi there unsure where to ask so i have joined this forum hoping someone will know. I am currently employed by a large firm as a fire alarm engineer for the past 10 years mainly service and small works including emergency light service. I have completed many courses over the years and am Bafe registered and Bs5266 parts 1-7-8 for emergency lights and BS5839 parts 1-4-5 fire alarm.

Now my mate has 13 HMO,s which he wants me to look at the fire alarm and emergency lights each year and issue certificates .

Alarms are just 240v wired with battery back up so nothing to them really. My question is as this would be out of my current work hours and i cant use their paperwork or certificates what would be the next step? What insurance would i need in order to be able to issue certificates to his local council. Or is it not worth the hassle? just seems crazy to employ someone to do it when i could service a couple every weekend.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Aside from the insurance are you going to carry out weekly/monthly checks as well as annual and any interim checks, for example six monthly as well as providing log books.
 
yes He wants me to provide the maintenance going forward and I’d provide a logbook for each property and record all works in them just as I would on any other site. He would pay for the insurance as I said I didn’t want paying I would just get a drink off him for each job as it’s not much work . Thinking it may be easier for him to just get a local electrician in but not sure if they can issue certificates? What company would I put on the certificate if I was to go down that route? Need to be vat registered? Sorry this is all new to me as with being employed everything is covered which I guess you tend to take for granted just turn up and everything is filled out on iPads now so I never see a paper trail anymore .
 
yes i would pop to each property and check what has been installed and make an asset list for each property but as i say these are just 3 bedroom semis so nothing major in terms of maintenance.

any advice is appreciated and if you think its worth the hassle.

Whether it is worth the hassle is up to you but I certainly wouldn't be doing it for a drink off him friend or no friend.

Make sure you have the correct insurances and if you are competent to do rhe work then crack on.

Just make sure you get paid a proper rate as a lot of risk is on you.
 
thanks i will look around for some insurances, is it just public liability insurance i would need?
