I'll cut to the chase - bought a 1500 watt pure sine wave inverter, which has a small screw and a nut coming out of the chassis labeled "ground", and they provide an associated 12 inch wire, ring at one end, that I can of course attach and tighten down to this exterior screw. The other end of the 12 inch wire is an alligator clip, implying I clam on something to ground it. What the heck can I ground it to? It's going to be stationary, on a shelf in my garage - next to two 100aH batteries. There are two standard electrical outlets near by, which made me wonder - why doesn't someone make an adapter that I can just plug into an electrical outlet that provides me a way to connect to the ground portion (bottom prong)? Anyway - any help appreciated, I am a novice as I'm sure you can tell. I did buy the right inverter and batteries though, it's just a system to run my chest freezer for an hour in the middle of a blackout.

Drive some kind pipe or anything metal in the ground and create your on ground and don’t use that alligator clip for your connection they sell connectors at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

cant you buy a plug and only connect the ground pin?

NO, that was a stupid idea?
just trying to get my head around the implications of an inverter with a ground lead floating around you could touch when not plugged in.
no worse than not having one at all, but would be better to permanently connect it to something that is well bonded to earth.

Of course as long as a good earth ground
