Hello new member here, I've been a sparky for 24 years, seen a lot of changes over the years, these days every man and his dog seems to be self employed and on their own scrapping for the next job. Now the government introduced part p for domestic homes, how about part something for the work place. How many times do you go into a factory or industrial unit and see a mess? employers should have a duty of care to electrically maintain their workplace by law.:banghead:

Hello whaler, welcome aboard. Enjoy the forum. :D

Thankyou for the responses. this is a very informative web site, I'm gonna use it alot me thinks!

Welcome and in response you will find employees who own their factories do have a duty to maintain the electrical installation, if rented its is then between the landlord and employee to what is agreed in the terms of the lease.
The issue is enforcement of said laws, no one goes round inspecting factories for their electrical standards in a sense of goverment spot checks even though they pose equal health and safety issues that machinery has to comply to, spot checks on machine safety is common and enforcement is strong.Probably best to leave as is now because if heavy enforcement was applied now you would have a massive rise in industrial electrical needs and alot of bodgit and scarpers taking advantage, a gradual system would be the chosen method where demand would be a slow rise.

How many times do you go into a factory to install new stuff and find something in there that requires attention, it happens alot to me , tell the owner and hes not interested. What do you do? It frustrates the hell out of me!!. I think they think your just drumming up work for yourself. Why can't we report it to somebody and then action is taken. can't we say we have a duty of care towards the integrety of the whole buildings electrical installation. Like domestic installations.

I recently did a job periodic inspection in a local factory it was horrendous! You have no idea really my mate and i were terrified taking the covers off the boards they were so bad; Other boards had no cover at all while others had the lives taken out of circuit and left in the board while the neutral was still in use somewhere! 1mm cables were being protected by 32 amp breakers etc The long and short of it all 30 distribution boards failed the inspection the owners had to take notice as the report was requested by their insurance company!
