I have earthed the metallic sheath of SWA cable by wrapping around the bare earth wire (sleeved off) around a bolt and tightened on to the brass eyelet using a nut as shown in the picture.

Is this acceptable? or should I really crimp it using the one shown on the picture below and bolt it on to the brass eyelet?

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Crimp it, the copper will squash over time and become loose, I also double nut it to make sure it stays tight.

And it looks crap! :D

Crimp it every time IMO have never be a big fan of copper wrapped around bolts.

Whats with the big nick in the cable bedding? hope it aint gone through any of the insulation!

Echo the above comments re the sheathing.

I would normally put the bolt through the base of the enclosure as well, more secure that way.

As above always crimp. Also I always use brass bolt!

Can't say I'd use a gutter bolt either - Whats wrong with a proper brass pan screw? Also I agree with Truckster about using double nuts. Sorry mate but even for purely cosmetic reasons I would be happy with that.

To be fair to the OP, the current syllabus of the 2330 states that "roofing bolts" should be used and not drilled through the case as to maintain the ip rating, tripe I know as I use brass panel screws and bolt thro but that is what is being taught at the moment

Fair enough if it has a suitable IP rating to maintain, that makes sense. That's one of todays lessons :D

another argument based on the supposition that rain falls up, not down. any IP rated box i fit, i drill a drain hole in the bottom. seen so many so called IP65 boxes half full of water.

Im with tel on this one i always drill a drain hole at the bottom of IP rated items , MK master seal range have drain holes , unless its going under water that is , i have to admit i do use roofing bolts but instead of the horrible square nut i use Nylocks aint going no where then

Thanks for all the inputs, seemed like lesson time and I have learnt a few things. As Amp David says, I too love to use brass nuts/bolts but couldn’t find suitable ones and I am hence sticking to what I have used earlier. Really wanted to use “Piranha Earth Locking Nuts” but my local shop or the “Bigshed” doesn’t do them.

I have taken your advice on board and have crimped it with suitable eyelet. The IP rating of the box hasn’t been compromised as the hole I drilled was big enough just to thread the lug-nut thro’.

Cheers!

Yeah, they guys are right. Crimp, crimp and crimp. double nut and don't forget your washers and copper grease!

And be a little more careful with whatever you are striping the outer sheath of with. Looks like a stanley blade incident to me.

Just out of interest, did you split the cores on the earth cable? Seen this done countless times and given out many b*llockings for it.

Should have used a crimp for sure and i have always used 2 nuts on a banjo in a plastic enclosure. You cannot make a good reliable electrical connection by clamping the banjo onto plastic. Use 2 nuts on the gland with the banjo sandwiched between them.

Biggest echo ever here. Always 2 nuts on the banjo for me aswell. Thought I was the only one!
