Hi,
Am I the only one who finds the JIB infuriating? I have recently received my ECS card which proudly depicts me as a trainee electrician! I have C&G 2360 parts 1&2, C&G 2391, 2382, 2399. Apparently I'm not an electrican. I think it is ridiculous that I am expected to go back to college and start from scratch to get an NVQ in order to be recognised as an electrician on my ECS card. Why were the C&G courses still being offered if they were no good? What a waste of time and money! I'm not fussed about being an 'approved electrician' but 'electrician' would be nice! I'm embarrassed to show anyone my ECS card as it has TRAINEE written in big red letters on it. Is there any other way for people in my situation? There must be hundreds of others like me. They could at least offer some sort of bridging course to bring older qualifications into line.

Cheers

It happened to me I have the 2330, 17th Edition and 2391. I also got a trainee card. I'm doing the 2356 at present. I no longer use JIB cards

You dont need to go back to college and start again.

I believe there is still time to complete the NVQ online with companies such as Delta Electrical Training & XS to name a few.

There are a few threads on here regarding doing the online NVQ.

A quick google will probably throw upo some more options.

Thing is its not just JIB, if you dont own a nvq3 or equivilant, your not a qualified electrician on paper

Shame for all the old timers, however im sure the same will happen in the future to me, when nvq3 is no longer good enough
Regardless if you like jib/use them, its becoming more compulsary as they are affiliated with ECS, and cscs as of which you need to obtain access to a lot of sites to prove competancy and that you have sat the health and safety exam

How else do you easily prove your quals without walking around with copies of them?

I was Working for ABB yesterday and they asked for all my quals, showed him JIB card which lists them and said that will do, makes life much easier

All well and good "knowing" the job, but the card proves they have electrical knowledge not just " oh well My mate dave said you could do it that way"

I worked hard for my qualifications like many of us on here, i like having my card to show ive gone through proper training and care enough about my job/career to prove my competancy, if any elements of doubt crop up its there and you can soon shut people up, for what it costs its stupid not to get one, i think the biggest issue here is people are worried they wont get a gold card back just like the OP and thus shying away from applying

I did apply and successfully received my money back...!!

reason behind... i don't have the City and Guilds Level 3 course.... i have a BTEC Level 3 instead

i was originally told its fine as its an equivalent then told no its not it has to be C&G or nothing!

Dellboy, it is not the the City& Guilds courses are no good in fact they are the best for the theory, it's just that they don't prove that you can do anything practical, hence the reason for the NVQ. As others have said you do not need to go back to college there are other options, including your employer if you have one. If you need an ECS card ( because you want to work on the industrial/commercial sites) then I'm afraid there is no way round proving your practical competence if you want a JIB Electrician Grade. The colleges just offer the courses and don't seem to explain what else is required, depending on what sector you want to work in. Good luck!

I dont see why they cant just be a statutory set of qualifications, serving an apprentiship alongside them and then you become qualified

As far as im aware if you aint got nvq3 you aint qualified and cant really call yourself an electrician, i went out of my way and studyed nvq3 so why shouldnt anyone else?

In fairness i do know lads who are really good at doing practical aspects of the job however they have to be told what gos where etc... , being and electrician is about understanding why it gos there and if its safe to do so

My point to the JIB was...

I studied an Engineering Apprenticeship with RN,

I have been i the Engineering/Electrical/Nuclear Trade since 2003 have TMIET registration with IET and still im a labourer!! lol............

Nail on head.
It pleases me greatly that its tough to get the gold one otherwise all the 5 week wonders will be waving them around.
Makes to easier to spot the time served pro's.
