JIB Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) JIB infuriating!

Hi,
Am I the only one who finds the JIB infuriating? I have recently received my ECS card which proudly depicts me as a trainee electrician! I have C&G 2360 parts 1&2, C&G 2391, 2382, 2399. Apparently I'm not an electrican. I think it is ridiculous that I am expected to go back to college and start from scratch to get an NVQ in order to be recognised as an electrician on my ECS card. Why were the C&G courses still being offered if they were no good? What a waste of time and money! I'm not fussed about being an 'approved electrician' but 'electrician' would be nice! I'm embarrassed to show anyone my ECS card as it has TRAINEE written in big red letters on it. Is there any other way for people in my situation? There must be hundreds of others like me. They could at least offer some sort of bridging course to bring older qualifications into line.

It pleases me greatly that its tough to get the gold one otherwise all the 5 week wonders will be waving them around.

you dont need a jib card to go alone doing domestics,a Electrical Trainee doesnt need one

Ask JIB.
Only they know why you didnt meet their criteria.
And it is possible to get the gold card without the nvq3 , my route was industry assessed by my former employers whom provided references.

this is where it falls down a bit,id prefer tmiet after my name than jib,someone with the right quals should automaticaly qualify for jib status imo

and so they shouldnt,but you have lads like ds who lets face it is more than qualified for electrical work,(which gets me onto another thing that electrical work is just confined to domestic properties like it seems to be) than most of us, gets treated like a Electrical Trainee,if were to make the jib the place for real sparks you cant dismiss people with the quals to keep it that way and keep the chancers out

I'd guess its because your Btec is a solely classroom based qual while C&G has on-site skills training , totally different IMO.
So stop with the tantrums like the kid who didnt get the ice cream lol.

to be fair biff being an electrician isnt just about site work and tray conduit etc,being a spark is about all aspects of electrical work from domestic to whatever,you have time served sparks who have only done domestic,you have time served sparks who have only worked in the shipyards but a good spark should be able to turn his hand to all aspects of work,he wont be a master of it all but he will quickly learn

I understand your point alarm man , however , the JIB only give the grading when there is sufficient site/skills experience to go with the qualifications which is quite right IMO
Just being MIET does not guarantee that.

I would like to say that what Ive seen of this NVQ3,the JIB favourite is just so open to misuse, I dont think Ive seen one proper photo record, just treated as a joke.

Gonna sign up when I get my tax rebate so I may have to eat my words...

im waiting for mine to arrive, i wanted improver on mine but because i aint got employer i get labourer card, bit annoyed but no biggy but you gotta feel sorry for blokes like durhamsparky and many others with bucket loads of experience. does that all count for nothing

granted,but not all sparks have worked on a site,some have not done a year of tray etc,all good practice i agree,but its role reversal for me and ds,i done the commercial and industrial then went marine to security its all the work of a spark imo,he's done marine and went domestic/commercial maybe looking to industrial i dont know,but he has the knowledge he's been an apprentice etc,what would you prefer in the industry,a Electrical Trainee taking away the jobs and driving the rates down,or someone who can actually do a job.i'll swap a week teaching ds how to bend conduit and make a pyro off for how to fix a nuclear submarine..fair swap.. piece of p*** that submarine lark..:cool4:

Biff the point your missing my friend is that the JIB "ACCEPTED" my application then shifted the goal posts and used City and Guilds as an excuse...!

they admitted that the theory and my experience were suficent but it needed to be City and Guilds...! load of tosh if you ask me...!


if i was trusted and trained to maintain nuclear powered generation equipment down to LV outlets not to mention look after one of the most critical vented UPS systems ever designed im sure that demonstrated MORE than some of the folk who stroll out of college with a Gold Card ever can do...! after passing a practical on how to glad a SWA and wire a couple of sockets!

Not my ideals , but the JIB's requirements unforntunately.
At the end of the day , my gold card gets me on site and in work without
having to carry a portfolio around.
Its a no brainer whether to get one even if it has improver or trainee stamped on it ,
it still counts.

I happily employed in a Perm Job as a building services technician (HV Authorised)
and I run a small but professional Domestic and Commercial / Light Industrial contracting company with 2 staff....

Then why the **** apply in the first place ?
Its a tough process even if you do meet all the criteria.
