Met a (proper so he said) electrician in my local Denmans. In a discussion about changing a CU he said I needed to put new tails in. I said 'wot even if they're the correct size and in good condition?' He says yes!

That's new to me! Anyone?

Pete

He's talking bxllxcks.

How does he know the DNO fuse size for EVERY home. I suspect he's going by those little pictures in the OSG!

LOL. And what does he feel he is achieving by this?

Just another plank that's repeating what he has heard without questioning it.

I've heard loads of comical stuff off of so called electricians in the wholesalers.....the best advice seems to come from the ones with property maintenance plastered across their T-shirts/van.

He is absolutely correct.

Whenever I change a socket I always replace the wiring to it.

It's the same with light fittings, rewire the lighting circuit every time without fail.

:speechless:

Good man. You can't be too careful where electricity is concerned.

I generally replace the tails for 25mm when I change a board, not that they need it as such, but I like to give things a freshen up.

Completely unnecessary.

I've devised a new method.

Strip out the cores from 10mm T&E and jam it in with the 16mm tails.

16 & 10 =26..... job done. :D

generally you need to replace the tails because the old ones are red/black. that will never do. what if a french electrician was the next man there. he'd hold up his hands in horror. oh, seems they did that in 1940.

He must be on commission or something.?

It always puzzles me this. The OSG tells us to replace the tails for 25mm regardless. I have mentioned this to one or two Network guys when they have been at a premises fitting an isolator, while cadging seals. Most domestic supply cables are 16mm, so putting a 25mm tail in "in case the cut-out is upgraded in future" seems a bit daft to me, and they have all, to a man, agreed. This has been irrespective of if a few seals have fallen out of their pocket as they got into the van.........I suppose there must be a logical reason for it?

That's why I never actually open the On-Site Guide. I only have a copy because I have to have one!

Does the OSG actually tell you that? I don't think so.

well, I'll gladly stand corrected, and it's in the van now and I can't be arsed to fetch it, but I am sure it does. I looked the other day when doing a particularly tricky tail swap, would have been bliss to leave them in and just put some blue and brown tape on them :)

Incidentally (and apologies for getting off-topic), why is posession of a guide book mandatory? It's BS 7671 that you have to adhere to (not the OSG).

TBH I always thought BS7671 was guidance.

I'm sure better minds will be along shortly to correct me. :D
