Hi I am building a solar system and need advice on what cable to buy, I bought 6mm2 cable and found the inner wire was only 3mm. I have 4 12volt 80w 5amp panels to be wired in parallel, 2 110amp battery to be wired in parallel. The cable length between panel and batteries is 12m, I have conduit to run cable as it is out in the country.
PS I am new to solar.

If you mean that the conductor is about 3mm in diameter, then that does indeed have a cross sectional area of about 6.0mm2 (Pi x d x d )/4. If you're wiring the 4 panels in parallel, then the maximum current you'll get (if 5amp per panel) is circa 20amps and with a low DC voltage ('12V') you'll be dropping about 11% over 12m. The charge controller probably needs 16-22volts to charge a '12V' battery. I.E. if the panels are really 12V it's not going to work, you might for example want the panels with 2 series panels in parallel (nominal 24V at 10amp peak)
