Im doing a job in a 10 year old house nothing major just extending a cooker circuit and adding a few downlights. the cu has the rings on rcd with two spare ways, can i simply put the cooker / lights mcbs onto the rcd side ? sorry for the amateurish question

Yep but if you are putting down lights in the ceiling and no extra cables down the wall you don't have to rcd lighting circuit as you aren't putting any cables in the walls

Like Murdoch I would go for the RCBO for the lighting.

I’m glad you haven’t gone down the “it’s old, it’s got to be replaced” route.

Old doesn’t mean bad. Unlike me, I’m just old and bad tempered!
