Discuss Adding a RCD incomer to a cartridge fuse board? in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hello guys this is my first post as I'm only recently qualified (but doing the job for 4 years) . But my question is as my title suggests. Is it acceptable to add 80A 30mA incoming RCD before a cartridge fuse board but the wiring is still in compliance (pvc/pvc, csa's etc). They don't want to change the board to save money etc.
Thanks guys.

Not a particually good idea to have an up-front RCD device on any electrical installation for obvious reasons. But yes, there is no problem whatsoever having RCD protection on cartridge or even rewireable fuses!!!

Whilst not ideal, and technically a non compliance with 314.8, you could argue that it's better than none at all in certain circumstances.

Problem is under a fault condition you loose everything, sockets lights etc. Could be an issue for an elderly person at nightime for instance.

But at least if the three year old pokes something in a socket only the house lights go out and not the three year olds.

Not good practice, but in my opinion it is improving the safety of the installation.

Anyhow Lenny,

If there really old they will be blind, so no relevence

And if there about my age they got used to power outages in the 70's so also irrelevent?
