Hi Guys

A local church has had 4 mtrs cut off it's lightning tape (20mm x 3mm) from floor level up. My question is can a replacement length be installed and connected to the remaining tape and does any cert have to be issued?

Kind Regards

John

I would suggest that when you replace the tape you fit a cover to protect it from future theft and use security type fixings to prevent easy removal

not to sure you can cover a lightning down tape if you did it would have to be some sort of insulated material , something about flash over durin a lightning strike

Yes you can joint a lightning down conductor tape by using the fitting from the link below.

As for a security cover, never actually seen one fitted, however there should be a test point fitted to the down conductor, at not less than 1.60m from FGL (see same LINK page). You need to test the resistance across any joints made on a L/Protection system and should be no more than 0-25 ohm, Don't forget to test across the test point/link when fully tightened too...

So because of the test point, any security cover will need to be removable for testing, if not ...then No!! But i suppose you can always use security screws/bolts fixings for the security cover. You don't have to worry too much about flash over, considering the lightning down conductor is exposed to touch under normal installed conditions anyway. ....
