Hi Guys
Magnet is refurbing a kitchen.
The client wants all switches out of sight (in cupboards) which Magnet has agreed to. Their electrician has installed a cable (concealed under plaster) for the cooker hood vertically from ceiling to a point below the working surface where I guess it will be connected to an FCU.

How does this comply with the requirement for the zone to be visible ie. in line with an accessory e.g. FCU or socket? Does the cooker hood count as an accessory?

If this is OK, can I run the cooker supply cable (which is my responsibility), the same way, in line with the cooker!!?

Cheers!

Pete

cables should be in line with accessories ( sockets, FCUs etc.) NOT APPLIANCES.

show them the osg safe zones diagram. can't see a cooker hood there. also, if he's relying on a FCU to provide a safe zone for his cable , that FCU should be visible and obvious, not hidden away in a cupboard where nobody knows it's there.

Magnet are an awful company.

Surely not as bad as b+q.

I did a conservatory in Bath recently where the b+q spark had rerouted the sockets around the kitchen, altered the lighting, adding bits on both, and was also fitting the units because the fitters hadn't turned up. No RCDs. No testing.

My mind had a bit of a boggle there ..... It was trying to work out how you fit a conservatory into a bath.

It's ok now - all back under control.

Is it below 50mm from the surface, or does it have adequate mechanical protection does it meet both of these points? if it isnt/dosent, then In your opinion does it pose a danger, and will your cooker cable pose a danger if you install the same way? The regs are guidance only, and as long as what and how you do things is not dangerous then you are pretty much at liberty to do what you want. Sometimes we need to apply common sense.

If it helps any, my cooker hood has a supply to it straight up the middle of the wall, and is fed from the hob ignition JB in the cupboard below the hob. I have a stainless steel splash back on the wall between the hob and the cooker hood. I am highly unlikely to ever want to drill any holes in the middle of the wall above my hob! It may or may not be compliant with the holy grail, but that doesn't matter, it is safe!

Cheers…………Howard

What is it with modern kitchens and the desire to hide all sockets and switches in cupboards? I have recently had a lively discussion with a site manager about putting all sockets in the cupboards out of view, especially isolation switches! Not helped by just about every appliance needing an isolation point, even the microwave was just over 15A!

do you class your light fittings as appliances??
i certainly consider my light fittings to be accessoriess.

Its the definition of appliances I'm calling into question.

As far as I'm concerned if it uses electricity and it screwed to the wall it would be wise to consider cables in walls and safe zones. So I think the same goes for lights and cooker hoods.

i see your point. a bit of a grey area.
