hello guys

Garden brick lights all need replacing as they are waterlogged.
Client paid for me to fault find and the existing cabling gave plus 2 meg ohms so the cabling appears to be healthy.

Question client has asked is what guarantees I give.
I normally give 5 years on cabling I have installed and I pass on manufacturers guarantees on excessories.
I don’t want to spook the client and say I don’t want anything to do with your old cabling guarantee wise, but I also don’t want to guarantee old cabling.

easy. you quote a guarantee for what you are supplying and fitting. on your quote and invoice state something like " while the existing wiring has been tested and found fit for continued use, i will not be liable for any future failures of cabling/equipment that i have not installed"

I agree strima, just looking for a soft way to say (not my problem guv)if the old cabling goes bang in 1 Years time

previous posts have given the answer.

No guarantee (unless a workmanship issue, unlikely!) on parts not supplied. 1 year labour on parts supplied, I'm not coming back in 24 years to replace a now faulty socket FOC.

1 year guarantee on parts I’ve supplied only for me also. Wouldn’t guarantee wiring installed previously by another or any parts supplied by customer.

I agree about 1 year generally for parts supplied, but what about LED lamps & panels? Often they offer a longer guarantee, e.g. 3 or 5 years, with this clearly marked on the box, do you come back and change these for free within that time limit?

Sockets, Switches, Fuseboards etc are 15 years and beyond on manufacturers warranty...I'm not coming back Free of Charge in 14 or 24 years to replace a now faulty socket.

If it’s a GU10 LED I would probably replace for nothing up to two years to keep a domestic customer happy. Panels I would stick to a year labour guarantee

1 year onsite is reasonable, after that chargeable, but if parts have longer warranties then that will save the customer money.

I always clarify to customers that I am not responsible for their existing cable or accessories, only my workmanship and the parts I've supplied and fitted.

I give a year on my work, only on the parts I've supplied. If any part has a longer guarantee then its a replacement part via the manufacturer.
i.e. if part has five year cover and breaks in two. If the customer calls me out, its a new charge to fit and test, as my year is up.
