Hi everybody!

My name is Aga. My boyfriend is thinking about going into electrical industry (he doesn't have previous experience, but he seems to be quite passionated about this). He's 33 and has no degree about this, however is hard-working and he can make a really big effort to get needed certificates and experience, even if for those coming 2 years he'd have to resign from regular jobs.

My question is, how do you think, where is the best place for him to get an international certificate? We are thinking about moving to Australia or New Zealand in 2-3 years and he'd like to have all needed certificates then... aren't we too fast? I've heard there is a lot of troubles with getting the right qualification, but maybe it is possible to 'upload' the british certificate into australian after moving? It seems strange to me, I've checked few days before that electrics are on the list of needed people in Australia, and then there are so big problems - what's the matter? Or maybe there are institiutions (in London) offering international courses? What kind of courses do you recommend?

The problem is that J is spanish, he doesn't have any GSCE's and I'm not sure how about applying for colleges then, if considering at all. Now J is working as a cook, something completely different, but few years before, in Spain, he was working in building the houses, so he touched the electrical installations, but he has no certificate. One last question - who else can I ask about this? Can Australian Embassy help us, or we need to keep looking for answers on our own?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Cheers,

Aga

Hi Aga. Im new here too and I am currently completing an electricians course at my local college. Taking into consideration what mentioned, I would suggest visiting a local college or one of your preference and ask them what is the best route for him to take. Mention to them what you have said here. Ask them if they know what qualifications will be recognised abroad. Then go from there. Hope that helps.

Hi Andre!

Thank you for your reply. I was considering going to the college but I wasn't sure if there's no better option. For sure now I'll try! And if you'd have any mnore suggestion, I'll be happy to hear them :)

go to the college...!!

dont be tempted to look at fast track courses as they wont bet the certs Australia want!

Hi, his best option in my personal opinion is to go to college in the evenings (for 3 years generally) and find work as an electricians mate to gain the practical experience. The college course mainly teaches the theory of electrical systems and how to design them safely.

Yeah, college, but as I told J is 33 and I'm on not sure if he's not too old for the college... but if it's the best option then for sure I'm gonna push he there. But how about GSCEs? If he has none, then he needs to pass the special exam. But if it would be too difficult for him, what would you recommend instead? For sure there is more options!

Thanks!

Does he have a reasonable understanding of English and a good grasp of mathematics? Many colleges will allow people to sit an exam to find out whether they are capable enough to learn if they have no GCSEs. Evening college is not easy and takes real dedication plus also taking the time to study when not at college. Age is no barrier. He could look into an electrical apprenticeship, they are more difficult to get but they do give a far better understanding.

How about math and English... the problem is that his English is not on a very high level, it's something between intermediate and upper-intermediate, but he understands everything and there is no problem with normal conversation, worse with advanced vocabulary, true Englishmen with their accents and - I guess - with writing tests... He's clever, shouldn't have problems with math, but if he'll have to write it in English... wow, I've no idea. I guess the best idea is to ask the source - college, I mean. Currently I'm on my holidays so I can't do that, but as soon I'll be back in London, I'm gonna kick J to go there and take as much feedback as possible :-).

Thanks!
