As MidWest says, 1 direction forces the air downwards, the other direction pulls the air upwards, I recall fitting a pile of them in a local pub/restaurant, during my apprenticeship, the purpose then was to pull the smoke up towards the ceiling, back when you could still smoke in pubs of course.
 
Quick Update - response from manufactorer:
"As I said, it is difficult to say in which way the items fit.
You need to test It on your own risk."
He also said in a previous note that they aren't allowed to guarantee anything that isn't Westinghouse. I still think the physics are the same in both countries and a coupler is the safest thing. Thanks!
