Hello :-)

I have come on to this forum hoping to get a the opinions of the experts.. thats you guys... who are in the trade already and see whether my plan to train as an electrician at 37 is viable.... I hope to live in Portugal and wanted a trade to take with me to give me a steady flow of beer tokens!!

Welcome Beth,

Plenty of info on here about wiring sheds up if they have them over there?
Could be a nice little earner :)

Welcome aboard, a lot depends on what route into the trade you want to take. If you want the quick fix short course route then I'd say no. If you want to learn from the ground up taking the college courses while trying to get work as a mate to build your portfolio then yes. There are caveats though, work is thin on the ground and we're all finding it tough these days. You're also going to be up against people who have more experience in the job so will automatically find themselves ahead of the queue for jobs than you. All that said, it's still a very enjoyable line of work and one that you will never stop learning. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Trev,

Thank you I appreciate any feed back I can get, I am full time empolyed and don't plan on leaving that job until I have to, my hope was to either do evenings and a full day in college etc for 12 - 18 months and do some work with a qualified electrician who is a mate of mine as his lacky as and when. The electrician work would not be my only income whilst in Portugal I have other plans but I know having a fall back plan is important in life, and if I can get some extra income it would help....

Nice of you to respond :-)

Evening classes and working with your qualified pal is your best bet mate. Go to your local college and see about enrolling on the City and Guilds 2357 (I think that's the right number now)

Hi beth brave move you are wanting to do. I have retrained myself for the past 3 years and I am 42. While we have lights glowing at nights we will always need good sparks to fix them. Just set your mind and go for it.:)

Trev, thank you thats answered numerous questions :-)

cmac70 thats a reassuring response, I am not expecting an easy ride of it I hope to run a campsite and do a few jobs on the side to keep my head above water.... I rather be struggling in Portugal sunshine than UK rain!!! ;-)

markc123... If I couldnt take the banter I should not be even contemplating this ;-) I would be doing hairdressing!!!

There is not alot I wouldn't do for a large glass of vino!!

However having just found a course for the 2357 with a price tag of £7000, I am now thinking hair dressing may not be a bad idea after all :-/

So thats not the norm?!? I dont even know if I would be entiltled to funding I am doing some research into it though... Thanks Trev

Even if you don't get funding (which you probably won't) it'll be a shedload cheaper than the 7k option

Thanks all, I am looking for part time evening courses due to working full time in either Birmingham or Tamworth?!?
