might be poor by todays Standards ?
But when it was installed long ago, it may well have been normal.
and if it has lasted this long with no problems
Then it cannot be so bad.

A missing lid 40 years ago would still have been unacceptable...

In fact standards 30-40 years ago were very much better than they often are today

It’s only due to years of bad maintenance and diy interference most older installations get completely trashed

Isn't the FIRE ALARM DO NOT TURN OFF spur switched off:tearsofjoy:
It is indeed there are fire alarm cables hanging everywhere I'm not even sure the alarm itself is there anymore. Red and black 2 core flex also has both cores connected to the earth bar whatever it is doing

How did you leave things, manage to make it safe?
Can you get hold of another cover?

Piece of cardboard with danger risk of electric shock scribbled on, hinged at top with bit of leccy tape (so you can lift up to rewire fuses) will do.

Was asked to an EICR a building today, old church converted into workshop. This was 1 of 6 boards, this is how i found it. Was told it hasn't had a cover in 20 years and the last electrician passed it so what's the issue? Some people are unbelievable. To make matters worse it's at head height and not even hard to reach

Why is there a blank on the left screwed to the wooden frame?

well if there was a bomb scare in that building and Michael Cane (oops sorry, the EOD operator) was told to "cut the blue wire" then s(he) would instantly know that this cluster f+ck was not part of the bomb timer circuit, and could carry on searching for ""the blue wire".

Of course, if the bomber chose red as the trigger wire, then this would become an issue. But that is outside the scope of BS7671. Which BS do bombers follow????
