Has anyone got any recommendations for decent 8 watt (ish) LED lamps that have similar colour rendition to halogens please?

When customers ask me about converting their downlights to LEDs I usually suggest they try before they buy - and fits some GU10 samples I keep - from variety of manufacturers.

The most difficult to please - and where I lose the business - is when they want to dim halogens, and keep the warm colour. A few of the warm white LEDs I've tried - rated at 3000K - produce a straw coloured light that can make everything in the room look drab and flat. Doesn't go down a storm!

I've current got lamps from Kosnic, Aurora, LAP and Halolite.

The problem is that halogen lamps have the aluminium coated dichroic reflector that allows the infra red part of the spectrum to go through it. In theory most of the range of light that passes through isn't in the visible spectrum but it does make a difference to the light rendering that a lot of people can notice and one that LED versions don't emulate very well.

I have 4.5 w megaman warm white in the house, was quite surprised how close to halogen they are. the cool white although brighter has a "dirty" look if you know what I mean. Having said all that my eyesight is pants so any light is good light

Many thanks for those suggestions. Today I've added (another) Aurora and a Megaman to my sample collection ...

The Aurora is the AU-DGU1060W/30 - A 6W dimmable lamp 3000K, 280 lumens, 540 cd 40 degrees and 30,000 hours. (£10)

The Megaman is LR2307dDG -WFL ... etc .. 7W also dimmable, 2800K, no lumen rating, 650 cd, 35 degrees and 25,000 hours. (£16!!)

I shall trial with my customers and report back - in case you're interested.

Heck on a cracker...
I thought the LEDHut 4.5W 360 lumen ones were expensive at £7.70 inc VAT trade price...

I know they are expensive, but the dimmable Philips 6W MasterLED in 2700k is very very close to a halogen, and look better than some other cheap LEDs.

I have used several hundred and never had a problem.

having tried a lot of different models over the last 4 years, I'd really recommend the eddison branded 5 & 6 watt GU10 warm white bulbs available from CEF (think they might be a GE company).

The 6W is pretty much a direct replacement for a 50W halogen, the 5W is brighter than a 35W halogen.

They're significantly brighter than some nominally 9W chinese jobs that we've measured as actually drawing 6.5W.

The cheap chinese ones don't seem to last, with several failures in the first year from the one batch we did try, so I'd not recommend that route.

I'm going to get me one of these to try/show. They are about £18 one-off. What sorts of discounts can you get for 50-ish?

Interesting comment about cheap imports. LEDs are commanding a price premium for their low power consumption AND long life - but how will we know if we get all those 000's of hours promised on the label?

I read somewhere that the average light bulb is on for about 3.5 hours a day - that's probable in US, with more daylight, so let's say 4.5 hours / day for our gloomier latitude - about 1,650 hours per year.

So the Philips MasterLED should last about 24 years - and wonder how many people with still have the receipt and warranty after 20 years?! Or will we see a rash of court cases as people sue suppliers of 25,000 hour lamps that blew after 2 years?

I think many of you will be surprised at just how many of those well known manufactures of LED lamps are producing in China. lol!!

Yes you get the too cheap to be true LED lamps, but in reality they are all deceiving the end user with these OTT claims of lamp life. All the figures that the manufactures use (for ALL lamps, not just LED's) are for what has been achieved in controlled conditions. I the real world those manufacturers figure's can be slashed depending on cycles of use . And why even the top names will generally state ''up to'' XX,000 hours and only give a 2 years warranty. Life expectancy of LED's should be better than CFL lamps, but will not be to the extent many of these manufactures claim...

If the truth be known, the manufacturer of LED lamps are milking the market for all it's worth, based on these unrealistic figures, coupled with the fact that many LED lamps cost less to produce than CFL lamps.
