Hi,
I last worked in the UK in 2006, I did a little bit of Part P work before then, but the regs and laws seem to have moved on quite a bit since 2006 and I've been out the loop.

I plan to do some work at home, loft conversion, ground level extension, new consumer unit, some new circuits and some circuits will be extended/modified. I also will install a PLC and control the various circuits with it while I'm away from home like heating and lighting probably incorporate some CCTV in to later as well.

Point is, would it be more cost effective if I gained registration to preform part P testing or would it be cheaper to get someone in to carry out the tests?

Seems a bit odd that 16 years after starting out in the industry I have to employ a spark to work in my own home but if that will be the cheapest way to get the bldg regs signed off that'll be the way to go.

Look forward to your replies

Check with your LABC what they require......if you are qualified you may be able to sign off yourself.

It all depends on the volume of work that you intend to do that is notifiable, If its the odd job here and there then Nic Ect is an expensive way of doing it. Not sure what your local Council charge to do the necessary sign off for building control. If i was you though id check and at which point you can take it from there.

As for getting a sparky to sign it off, Not permitted but if you can get Someone to do it then thats your call

so it's not possible to have one spark do the work and another test it and sign of the cert?

It is possible but most sparks with any sense wouldnt.......your signature = you are legally responsible. Why take responsibility for someone elses possible fire waiting to happen?
Some LABC's will accept an EICR for work already carried out.....you may be able to go down that route.

Isn't that what the three signature sheets are for. One for design, one for installation then final one for testing?
Yes that is exactly what they are for.
However do the schemes allow them to be used for 'self certification'?

My mistake I've used them when employed by a Nic approved company and different sparks done the first fix to the finals and test but now thinking about it think it think you both have to be employed by the company.

so, a hypothetical question. spark a is qualified, but not a member of a scam. spark b is also qualified, and a scam member. what is to stop spark a installing a notifiable job and employing spark b as a QS?

Nothing probably.

Thats why it (the QS system) needs removing.
