by the word 'find' what do u mean...iv advertised pretty much everywhere asked everysingle builder in my area all taken mate...no rings on the phone either
too many sparks in your area then mate, it would be a good idea to look further afield or look for different work than house bashing.

the Electrical Trainee will be fighting each other over these jobs

Try kitchen and bathroom fitters, they always require electricians. Or letting agents and landlords, you won't need many to be busy....watch the agents on paying.

I've never advertised, but have found plenty of work.
When I first went self employed I started off doing bits for family and friends who then handed out business cards to all their friends, plus I called a few contacts I had made as an apprentice and let them know I was available.

Why can't you go and find your own work?

You pay a high price for not having your own work in this game! Lol

all you get is the scraps left over

NO mate, you can't afford eastern Europeans, you'd be lookin' at failed asulym seekers or other 'vulnerable' people - etc.
Hang yer head in shame dude !

you say that but some people do actually work for that

No wonder so many of my quotations get ignored, I'm probably being undercut the same way. This was once a good profession, now its becoming akin to a barter at a Moroccan market.

the biggest problem is they will use your quote to try to knock the first one down

I think the biggest problem is trying to do everything right and correct, and that many customers do not appreciate what's involved and go simply on price.

were expected to first fix new build houses in a day. Just me and an apprentice and i mean everything from drilling, boxing and wiring to ducting, finishing off. Its a joke we manage it but the work is average joe at best. It annoys me because you should be allocated the time to do a decent job. I hate doing it but some other sod will if i dont and i dread to think of how he does it. Thats why price work is awful and the prices are low. We get £250 for a first fix to split between 2 of us and we have to pay the office monkeys. I usually get £80-£120 per first fix depending on size.

1 day!! your dreaming unless you have a polished crew who have been doing this for a while or your just lashing it in.

One of my Sparkys with an apprentice will be finishing a 1 bed flat he started on monday tomorrow.

My excuse for a company mantra is one day for everything. The prices are so low that if you took your time you would get paid peanuts

Rome wasn't built in a day and you cant put quantity over quality when your putting peoples lives at risk its a fare days pay for a fare days work ! no wander there is no work in your area if everything is done in a day but next week there will be more work after this weeks work has gone on fire so just be patient ! lol

do you think you will find a slave from the eastern side of Europe who will help you do this job in a day? I think you will end up trying to explain what you want him to do most of the day and that's what happens when you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Its just plain greed you expect 250 while you want a man to work like a dog for 50? Dream on

Dream on are you having a giraffe!!!!

Before I left these golden shores I was doing a refurb in Oxford Street and the workforce was mainly from Eastern shores. These guys would have bit your hand off for 50 quid a day, and these were sparks not mates in London!!!

Though I was just the consultant I was also asked to snag the work and apart from a few things the standard was acceptable if not spectacular. OK forget the 17th edition they had a supervisor who knew this, or so he said, but you only have to look on here and see some of the questions asked, there are few Brit sparks who know the 17th.

So for a grand a month for a 50 hour week, not only would you get your mate, but most likely a whole team in to do your rewire while you sat in the van.

This is where my trade has ended up. We are paying for all the Bankers, investment houses, insurance brokers Et Al to be in this wonderful European Club. Yes while the UK benefits from all this, which again is another debate there have had to be a few sacrifices, and we were the first ones up to the alter while the high priest was sharpening his knife.

A day to rewire a one bed flat, yes everything is possible, what you get after that day is debatable. Thank god I'm coming to an end in this game. You young guys, best of luck I really mean it.

"Testing not mentioned" best laugh I have had in a wee while. For £550 I would quite happily wire your shed with 2 double sockets on each wall and 2 lights. I might even run in the mains cable for good measure lol.
If your area of work is really London then you are going wrong somewhere if you cant achieve £200-£250 per day on day work. I lived in Canterbury, Kent for 13 years and I was achieving those sorts of figures until I left in 2006. I accept that prices have not really went up or even come down slightly but I am still in regular contact with my band of subby buddies that I generally looked after...and they did the same for me btw. they tell me that in the main prices are static.
If you are a proper sole trader then you should just look at getting a cards in job or even sub direct for a few firms as the hassle of being a sole trader is not worth it if you can't achieve rates well in excess of what a day rate subbing direct would be.
I have heard of the one day rewire teams....they have been going around since the year dot. Some of them really do a good job and work bloody hard and long hours.....BUT they do this for EXTRA ££££ not just for something near the normal day rate.
