Hi i've recently come to the end of my apprenticeship and have just taken my AM2 competence test. I passed all sections but one which was the wiring part. Because i don't do alot of 3phase because i'm more of an domestic installer, i wanted to know if you needed to label each phase conductor into the circuit breakers relevant to the phase number it went into? Say for example my lighting circuit which i have no problems with but failed on was connected into L2.. would need to label the phase conductor accordingly? This is the only reason i can see why i failed it and would just like someone to enlighten my situation. Cheers.

It is always a good pratice to label conductors according to the circuit or phase sequence. Makes life easier for alterations and maintenance. In the industry it is actually very important to maintain a phase sequency for lighting circuits, strobe effect on lathes etc.

Probably you failed because you didn't start the lighting with phase one. I don't think right now whether this is a requirement or not but logically I would start with L1.

Hi flowcap,
I have just sat my am2 assessment this week. An. Didnt achieve the install either, I know what I did wrong, rather silly I know but completely over looked a small part of the specifications on the carbon monoxide circuit. I wired from the db. To the unswitched fused spur in singles instead of FP200 cable. Gutted because I really thought I was gonna to time out on the first day, then by some miracle I pulled it all together in just 3.5hrs on day 2! So to mess up on something so simple. Had I noticed it would of only taken 5mins to change!! I'm going to appeal only because I feel that they failed me due to 1 error of overlooking a small part of the specifications for 1 circuit out of 6. Anyway its way to expensive!!! Regards the lighting your right it comes from l2 black phase circuit 2 in sequence, but I used Brown n blue twin n earth and sleeved my strapper wires with Brown sleeving! And I passes the lighting! It's a good point with regards to the colours for each phase, whether you would sleeve them with black to fit l2...?? But using L1, L2, L3 tags or tape would be better. Although like I said I didn't and passed.

How did you wire lighting? Twin n earth? Feed to far light switch then to light? Did you use screwless connector blocks for earths and neutrals in switches?? Did you use correct type mcbs ie type b not c? Did you put cpc and neutrals in db. In correct sequence?
