Well if you call being able to write a fake report knowledge then I guess you could say he has some.
Discuss Smoke coming from electric meter/fuse box area in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net
So should he of recommended the rewire? I'd rather not have that done if it's not essential. As we have hardwood flooring and laminate in all rooms. It would be an absolute nightmare!
Are those the rubber wires he's referring to? The ones he advised to get the electricity board to replace (free if charge)

We're not even getting the basics right here like getting the insulation into the enclosure.Are those the rubber wires he's referring to? The ones he advised to get the electricity board to replace (free of charge)

They won't replace them they are after the meter. All they will do is put you an isolator in. I can't understand why your electrician who must of pulled the main fuse didn't connect straight into the meter??

And this seems to becoming more common these days with the Electrical Trainee and younger electricians coming out of apprenticeships NOTE-- NOT ALLYeah but Dave I think you've missed a vital point buddy: Your a real spark that takes pride in doing your work properly, this guy was just a chancer out for money.
You missed "Boil in the Bag Sparkies"Ant.And this seems to becoming more common these days with the Electrical Trainee and younger electricians coming out of apprenticeships NOTE-- NOT ALL

And me come on Pete explain allPete, ya gotta explain that one to me sometime mate
Where are these rubber wires located for the cooker and lighting? Inside the CU? Sorry I'm no electrician.
Thing is, when it's getting late at night, it sometimes difficult to remember which form to use. Suppose it saves on paperwork
OP, just curious about your new consumer unit, could you post a picture with the lid lifted up (one on a hinge)?
To verify if your electrician is in a scheme, you can try this link (think you said he was in NICEIC?);
Competent Persons Register | Home - http://www.competentperson.co.uk/
He should notify your local building control as well for the CU change, if he's in a scheme. If he's not in a scheme, its going to complicate things a bit. It is the home owners responsibility ultimately.

Nothing to explain in all honesty, I'm not the person to claim the cudos from someone else, it was a member of the forum who first introduced me to this description (Kennyken) get the feeling it may be the Australian equivalent of the ubiquitous Electrical Trainee anyway I like it better, thanks Kenny for the pleasure it has given me, I think it's a cracker of a phrase sort of runs off of your tounge "Boil in the Bag Sparkie" wonderfulnice one kennyPete, ya gotta explain that one to me sometime mate

The suggestion, is that the circuits for the cooker & lighting are wired in vulcanised rubber, i.e. their whole length;
Historic Mains Cables - DIYWiki - http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php?title=Historic_Mains_Cables
If they are at the fusebox then they would go from there to whatever circuit they serve i.e within walls, under floorboards etc.
Without actually seeing the installation we have no way of knowing exactly where.

I see 1 company name that matches on there, but isn't anywhere near where I live?
So the cable inside the walls? The only visible cables I can see are all PVC... The cable the cooker is attached to is Grey PVC...
Done a Crocodile Dundee I reckon, gone walk aboutAgreed, it's a brilliant saying. Talking of Kenny, any idea where he's dissapeared to ?.
I've seen under the floor boards before, and they are all grey pvc cables... How did the guy know they are rubber if he hasn't even looked??
I don't know if you, Andy, or anyone else bothers to check the Profile of posters I don't know, I do, we have all heard and spoken a lot about young inexperienced Electricians, understandable, we, all of us had to learn and gain knowledge from experience, qualifications are a good and necessary thing, the one thing that ticks me off no end, is people who think they are Electricians, but perhaps would be better off doing something else, the descriptions on some of the profiles, "what electrical qualifications do you hold" some people don't bother for one reason or another, but some add things like "all of them" or "enough" makes my blood boil. The only reason I check is to tailor my answers, not to gloat I just feel lucky to have done an Apprenticeship, sorry for the rant Guys and Gals.Unfortunately your right & it's getting worse.

Thanks for all your advice guys, much appreciated. I'll contact NICEIC and see if theses guys are legit.

You should of had something like this;
or a CU populated with RCBO's.
Edit; The MCB's have been omitted for clarity
In the past cables have been manufactured with rubber insulation and grey sheath, the sheath wasn't always PVC either.
How do you expect us to know where he saw these cables? Why don't you just ask him?
Well I have no idea what it looks like on the inside. I'm not opening it.
Calm down dude. Was just asking... I'm not an electrician I know nothing. Seems the "electrician" knows nothing either. I'll see what niceic have to say.
I'm guessing this happens a lot, cowboy electricians doing botched jobs. While the customer remains totally oblivious and assumes all is up to standard.
Maybe not expected but somehow not shocked either...Talk about icing on the cake - no one expected that!
