Hi all,
At the moment I am carrying out some first fixes and converting rooms and re-wires and a new consumer unit (Im not installing the unit). I live in the countryside and suffer from power cuts quite a bit. The house is a single feed from a HT line through a pole (transformer) to the house. I have a couple of generators which run 110 and 240 with a 3kv rating. OK my question is I am a Firefighter for 30 years and on station we have a standby generator for power cuts and WW3 (which ever happens first) which we plug in and throw a switch and it runs the essentials on station.
Q. Can I put a system in where during a power cut I can connect up a generator throw a switch so I can power my heating combi (LPG) and a few lights etc. Is it a big job and most of all an exensive one. At the moment during a power cut I just unplug the boiler and connect with an extension lead and light a lot of candles (fire hazard and all that).
Thanks, Rich

a change over switch will be a good option, will allow you to switch whole installation into a generator feed.
i would recommend getting qualified electrician to install that for you. not that big job, couple of hours work.

OK, thanks for that, thats brill to know. I will ask the sparky who is doing my consumer unit for that. I thought that at this stage of disruption I wondered if it was a feasible task. Thanks Amlu for your advice.
