I have recently been accredited by Elsecsa, I have my 17th, 2292 and Part P VRQ. My practical experience is minimal but have my own van, tools and public liability insurance. I've been offered some smaller jobs and I'm working on a hourly rate of £20 per hour. One of my neighbours is a property developer and has a Polish guy he employs to take care of most of his electrical works but is not accredited to a part P scheme and I'm unsure of his qualifications. My neighbour seems to think that his knowledge and practical skills are excellent and if I was to work with him and his work met the required standard I would be able to sign it off on the part P side of thing! This would be working together not me just popping down the site to look things over, I appreciate that would be a bad idea!

This would be beneficial to me because I could learn some more practical skills with the guidance/knowledge of someone more experienced and regular work.

I'm being asked for a day rate but I'm not too sure what to give? I live in Twickenham and the work is around London. Any ideas?

i would put in a day rate of between £140 and £200. don't forget you've got your van to run.

You'd feel silly if you quote a figure and the guy says "oh no problem i thought you'd say more". Better to go in high and be negotiated down would be my view - don't undersell yourself.

you would only learn as good as the guy teaching, if hes rubbish then what you gonna learn - and remember itll be your sig on the cert.

work on what you need as a wage and add 50%.quote a day rate of £150+ you have a van to run, tools to buy/replace. household bills and on and on.

I know if I done that I would constantly be looking over my shoulder at the other guy, well at least for a while.

As I'm still learning the ropes (think that's the right expression!) I'm going to start at £150 which i guess is pretty lowish but I'm hoping to learn some of the practical side from the other chap but be careful that I'm not being caught bad habits along the way. I also appreciate whatever work is signed with my name against it is my work if something goes wrong. I'm only working part-time at the moment and it seems a good starting point. Thanks for all the advice. Dan
