Hi all,my name is Vaughan and I`ve been an industrial control specialist for the last 16 years.I was a Ford trained Multiskilled Apprentice so as such have done a lot of mechanical work as well as electrical, mainly automation, all types of control fault finding,PLC (S7,S5 Allen Bradley etc.),3 Phase, heavy industrial stuff too, near enough anything Industrial/Control related.

I left Ford in 2009 via voluntary redundancy,it was called Linamar by then and then I started my own non-electrical business and I ran it for 18 months, big mistake, should have stuck to what I knew!!!

Anyway, since February of this year, after a hideous 5 months of unemployment I managed to get a job in a high quality papermills as a shift electrical craftsman. The jobs been amazing so far, really interesting and I`ve dusted off my domestic/commercial installation skills too,as I tend to do this on my overtime shifts, rest of the time`s pure faultfinding, which I love!!!

ANYWAY!!!!

I`ve just completed a high voltage switching awareness course down at Cumbernauld near Glasgow, which I really enjoyed,I`ll be going back asap to do the city and guilds exam.
As tends to happen on these things, you meet up with others involved in the industry and I got chatting to a few boys who work on/offshore with oil/gas.

Of course their wages are a big attraction, but also for me the time off and shift pattern as although I get 10 days off a month now,I still feel I`m away a lot more than I`m home and I hadn`t realised that I`d find it so hard.

Talking to the lads,my experience and knowledge are up there with theirs,I`d say control wise above what their expected to do,but in order to get involved in this game,it seems I really need this CompEx certificate.

From what I can gather a lot of its down to intrinsically safe instruments, glanding etc,it sounds very much like the 2391 inspection and testing exam I did back in 2007,use of the regs etc but I`m really struggling to find out much more about it?

They run a course up here in Aberdeen and I`m told it`s very well done, but not particularly cheap,so of course I`d like to gather as much info as possible first before I go in feet first!!!!

I`m generally very good at exams,I passed the 2391 off my own back first time and I have very limited domestic experience which I felt the course was very biased towards, but it was a good excercise as well.

So any info or just to say "hi" would be greatly appreciated and of course if theres anything you think I maybe able to assist with, just ask,I reckon I`ve seen a fair bit of electro/mechanical faults in my time and I`m always ready to help.

Thanks,Vaughan.

Re: Newbie saying "Hi",a bit about me and asking for a bit of advice on the CompEx ar

Take a look here: CompEx Training and Certification

The dilemma is where to stop with the various modules and costs associated with them!

Cheers dude,I had a quick look on there but it doesn`t really tell you much,as you said its something that could end up being like a piece of string, neverending!!!

Are you in the offshore game yourself?

Re: Newbie saying "Hi",a bit about me and asking for a bit of advice on the CompEx ar

it can well be a piece of string kinda thing,
been a long time since I was compex. but looking into it again as seems to be quite a bit of work overseas for it again just now,
depends just what level the job you are looking at requires.

I`ll make some enquiries,I know the lad told me it was a 5 day course?
