I started my training in 1983 so have been around for a while now! I have noticed recently on various sites firms are employing more electricans mates than sparks .they do the easy stuff while us sparks do the fiddly and "stuff mates cant do". The deskilling has already happened . With rates at rock bottom and the work for us shrinking is it worth staying in the industry .Comments please

well as you know self employment has taking over as well,so could be 2 weeks or 10 weeks unless your in the click or can get in the click.

I too have seen this over the years however this trade has a way of keeping you in it! I tried to leave the trade, going to university training to be a school teacher now after completing my degree i am back at being a spark why? As long as people know you are a spark or you have family and friends you will always get can you just have a look at this for me syndrome. Now i have no issue telling people where to get off but when your mother asks you to look at a socket thats not working well you just do it no questions, hence the trade will always keep a hold on you no matter what you do. In general the trade is one of the best to be in and yes it is going through a rough patch, which is no different to other trades, but to answer your question then yes it is worth staying in as there really is very little else out there
