Like most energy companies,
we’ve been wrestling with increasing costs for the last few months.
And we’ve now reached a point where we need to increase our own prices to match
the increasing costs imposed on us. It's not something we ever do lightly and
I'd like to explain the background if I may.
There are two principal causes.
Firstly, the amount we pay to use the grid to deliver energy has gone up in the
last year. These costs are imposed upon us by the operators of the national
grids.
Secondly, wholesale market prices for energy have risen steadily in the last
year and in the forward market show no signs of dropping. Tensions in the
Middle East and high demand from countries in Asia – particularly China,
Indonesia and India – appear to be the main reasons for this. Since Britain
sources most of its energy from global markets now we are affected by events in
far flung places.
We make 38% of the electricity we supply ourselves, and this gives us a degree
of protection from wholesale price movements. But, the combination of the two
factors above is such that we need to adjust our own prices now.
We've put the details of our new prices below – they take effect from 21[SUP]st[/SUP] January 2013.
As we progress with the building of new sources of Green Energy we’ll become
increasingly self reliant and insulated from energy price volatility, and so
will our customers. Within the next few years we hope to double our own
generation and take a big step in that direction. It’s a direction that Britain
as a whole needs to move in, to protect the whole country from inexorable rises
in energy costs.
