I have a ring main in a kitchen to extend, socket position will be moved and existing position will no longer exist so cables / connections will be plastered over, plan is to solder and heat shrink cables then over tape all, so maintenance free connection and double insulated will this be ok as opinions seem to vary?

Personally i would pull the cables back, fit a connection unit in a cupboard (maybe power point for an appliance) and extend the ring without any connections been hidden behind plaster!

so would i if poss but,
cables run down from ceiling and no cupboards on wall  also trying not to make too much mess of plaster coving etc, new socket t be much lower than original.

Seems fine to me mate.I usually use thru crimps, but i can't see a problem with what you're going to do.

I would not have any concerns about a properly soldered hook joint with heat shrink sleeving.
Personally I would use glue lined heat shrink for an outer sheath too.

Technically this qualifies as site applied insulation so should be tested at 3750Vac RMS :D

If you dont have the equipment to do this then maybe some type tested insulated crimps, and some glue lined heat shrink to replace the sheath.

Householders ( some kitchen fitters) and diy ers would more than likely, extend with a few undersized connector blocks a bit of insulation tape, possibly, then plaster em in
They usually get away with that practise

Soldering and heat shrink is a million miles away from that,it is acceptable good practise, next only to renewing the cable
So soldier on with no remorse say I :)

Keeping zones of course
