*Thread Title Correction* Impedance

Hi, I'm going over some choice revision for my 2365 Lvl 3 course and have come across the question "What is the impedance of a 200V 50Hz circuit containing 8A?". Although I am presuming I need to use AC Theory, I have gone over all of my notes on impedance and looked through books/online and can't find anything that can help me. If it is AC Theory, I'm not sure what to do with the 8A(amps?) and surely it should be replaced by a figure in Farad's or Henry's??

This is probably a very simple question that I covered last year as I unfortunately lost a bunch of notes and my memory is awful! Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance, Kyra1509

Re: Inductance?

Hi Kyra, we have a dedicated Trainee Forum which is free and no strings attached and is there specifically for assisting anyone who's currently on a training course. Check this out and if you do the necessary I'll be able to give you access.

With only the information that you have recorded, are you over thinking the problem? All you know is that a circuit that is being supplied by 200 V @ 50 Hz has 8 A flowing in it. There is only one, very simple relationship, that you can apply. What is that relationship called?

All the OP has to do is look in a dictionary and not a text book for the meaning of the word.

Seriously son, go and find someone in the real world with electrical experience and knowledge.
Then ask on a face to face basis.
Or as Tony said Google ohms law Z or R impedance or resistance its all there.
Website based forums are full of good advice but also bad, and often information given is down to personal opinion rather than fact.
Because your in the early stages of learning, I would hate for you to pick up any bad habits or nonsense.
If you do use website based forums, always cross check the information with real world people.
And that IS good advice.

have you got any textbooks? it will help you understand things more.

its a good idea to surround yourself with books to reference when your not sure on things

I agree, I have learnt perhaps as much or more from reading for myself than in any classroom or workshop setting under instruction! That said, and books are probably a better source than the internet, we often pick up information and commit it to memory but are unable to recall it when an answer is required; as in this case. There may in some cases be benefit in telling someone the answer, particularly in the early stages of learning, but that does not develop their ability to recall and apply the knowledge that they have in any way. Furthermore, it can develop an unhealthy culture of dependence rather than independence!

definitely, if i spot a reg number on here ill pick the bs7671 up off my desk and have a quick look, it is easier to look through a book to find information than on the internet (if you know what your looking for)

If I might add a pedantic note, Ohm's law only states that the current through a conductor is proportional to the potential across it. It makes no reference to the relationship I=V/Z or anything to do with AC complex impedances. That is a generalisation, not Ohm's law itself.

geordie spark and trev are the experts here. VIZ is their weekly read.

Thanks LN, I for one am after a deeper and better understanding of the science on which electrical engineering is founded, and in participating in this thread have rediscovered things that I had forgotten or been introduced to a deeper understanding of Ohm's law. However, I am more interested in ways to support the development of knowledge, skill, competence and confidence. I wonder how the progression of this thread has enabled the development or increased the dependence of the OP, or perhaps both.
